PPSF Workshop 3: Economic Sustainability & Strategic Management of Remembrance Tourism Sites

PPSF WORKSHOP 2: Social Responsibility & Community Engagement in Remembrance

11-24 June 2026, Fondazione Campus, Lucca, Italy

How can remembrance tourism sites remain financially sustainable while continuing to serve communities, preserve memory, and contribute to regional development?

This question lies at the heart of PPSF Workshop 3: Economic Sustainability & Strategic Management of Remembrance Tourism Sites, a two-day workshop bringing together heritage professionals, sustainability experts, and remembrance practitioners at Fondazione Campus in Lucca.

Organised as part of the Preserving the Past, Securing the Future (PPSF) project, the workshop will focus on the economic dimension of sustainability and explore how remembrance sites can strengthen both their long-term viability and their positive impact on surrounding communities and local economies.

What to Expect

The workshop programme combines expert-led sessions, interactive exercises, and collaborative reflection designed specifically for professionals working in the remembrance and cultural heritage sector. Building on the outcomes of the previous two PPSF workshops, participants will begin by sharing examples of how they have applied earlier sustainability learnings within their own organisations. Outstanding initiatives will be recognised during a special presentation of the top participant projects.

The core sessions, led by sustainability specialists from Mascontour, will explore topics including local economic sustainability, strategic planning, sustainability management, and funding opportunities within the cultural heritage and WWII remembrance sector.

Participants will examine practical approaches to planning, managing, and monitoring sustainability strategies, while also discussing how remembrance institutions can better communicate their wider social and economic value beyond visitor numbers and ticket sales.

The workshop will also include a guided walking tour of the historic fortified walls of Lucc.

Why Attend?

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore practical approaches to economic sustainability in remembrance tourism.
  • Learn about strategic planning and sustainability management for heritage organisations.
  • Gain insights into funding opportunities and fundraising strategies.
  • Reflect on the broader social and economic impact of remembrance work.
  • Exchange experiences and ideas with professionals from across the sector.

The workshop will conclude with interactive reflection sessions focused on key lessons learned throughout the PPSF programme and discussions on future steps for integrating sustainability into remembrance practice.

By combining practical expertise, collaborative learning, and strategic reflection, this workshop offers a valuable opportunity for heritage professionals to strengthen the resilience, relevance, and long-term sustainability of WWII remembrance sites.
