PPSF Workshop 1: Environmental Sustainability in Remembrance Practice

PPSF WORKSHOP 1: Environmental Sustainability in Remembrance Practice

16-17 February 2026, Juno Beach Centre, Courseulles-sur-Mer, France

How can memorial sites and museums reduce their environmental impact while continuing to preserve and share the history of World War II in meaningful ways?

This important question will be explored during PPSF Workshop 1: Environmental Sustainability in Remembrance Practice, a two-day workshop bringing together heritage professionals, sustainability experts, and remembrance practitioners at the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer.

Organised as part of the Preserving the Past, Securing the Future (PPSF) project, the workshop will focus on practical strategies for integrating environmental responsibility into WWII remembrance practice. Through expert-led sessions, collaborative exercises, and an on-site study tour, participants will explore how sustainability principles can be effectively applied within memorial sites and cultural heritage organisations.

What to Expect

The workshop programme combines theoretical insights with hands-on learning opportunities designed specifically for professionals working in the remembrance and heritage sector. The opening sessions will introduce key concepts surrounding sustainability in cultural heritage and WWII tourism, led by sustainability specialists from Mascontour. Participants will gain insight into current challenges, good practices, and innovative approaches that can help organisations reduce their ecological footprint while strengthening their long-term resilience.

A central component of the workshop is the study tour of the Juno Beach Centre, where participants will learn directly from the museum’s team about their sustainability initiatives and practical experiences. The programme will also include interactive group exercises, reflection sessions, and discussions connecting theory with real-world application.

Why Attend?

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore practical, on site approaches to environmental sustainability within memorial sites and museums.
  • Learn from experts in sustainable tourism and heritage management.
  • Discover how sustainability policies can be implemented in WWII remembrance organisations.
  • Exchange experiences and ideas with professionals from across the sector.
  • Explore sustainable solutions to take back to your own museum or WWII memory site.
